The Igloo — Marathon lost its captain, and Palworld just hit a million again
vistas

Sunday, July 19, 2026. The biggest story in games today has nothing to do with a new release: the director of one of this year's most discussed games just quietly walked out the door at Bungie.

This is the print twin of today's The Igloo podcast episode — listen on The Penguin Alley. Today's episode: "Marathon Lost Its Captain — And Palworld Just Hit 1 Million Again."

The lead · Marathon's director is gone, and Bungie's 2026 just got harder

Joe Ziegler, the director of Marathon, has left Bungie. He confirmed it himself on social media. Four months after the game launched. One month after the studio went through significant layoffs. Three and a half years after he joined.

Marathon had a rough road: a live-service extraction shooter entering a genre already packed with established names — Escape from Tarkov, Hunt: Showdown, The Finals. The game launched to mixed reviews and did not lock in the playerbase a live game needs in that first critical window. Then came the layoffs. Now the director is out.

What this means for players: when a game's director exits this early post-launch, it rarely signals "everything is fine, we're moving on to great work." The question every Marathon player is sitting with right now is a simple one: who steers this from here, and does anyone at Bungie still have the mandate and the budget to fix it? There's been no clarity from the studio on the path forward.

The industry angle: live-service games live or die in their first three to six months. If you don't capture a sticky playerbase in that window, the math of servers, content cadence, and development team quickly turns against you. Marathon looks like a casualty of that window. Bungie's independence — or whatever shape its relationship with Sony takes next — depends on having at least one live game that works. The pressure is real.

Palworld is back near a million concurrent players

Here's a number that makes you stop and look twice: Palworld clocked almost one million concurrent players on Steam this weekend. The game that exploded at launch in early 2024, got acquired by Sony, faced a patent lawsuit from Nintendo, and seemed to be fading — is back, and the numbers are real.

What drives a comeback like this? The most likely combination: a steady drumbeat of content updates, a summer Steam sale window, and a playerbase that was always there, just quieter than it was at launch. The craft angle worth noting is that Palworld kept shipping. Content cadence matters more than initial review scores for live games with a loyal core.

If you bounced off Palworld in the launch rush and never returned, it might actually be worth another look. The game that shipped in 2026 is not the same one from eighteen months ago.

July 23 is about to be the most expensive Thursday of the summer

Four days from now, three major games launch on the same day: a new Avatar title, a new Halo, and a new Splatoon. The same Thursday. If you're on a gaming budget, Thursday is going to be a difficult afternoon.

It's a classic industry scheduling quirk — publishers all target "not competing with each other" right up until they all land on the same week anyway. The real winner here is probably whoever owns the biggest Game Pass subscriber count. For everyone else, wishlist management is about to get stressful.

Also on the radar

Jennifer English exits Tides of Annihilation for her health. The actor behind Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3 and one of the standout voices in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has withdrawn from Eclipse Glow Games' upcoming action title to focus on her mental and physical health — her words. The games industry should sit with this one a moment before moving on. An actor saying publicly that she needs to step back deserves more than a one-line update and a replacement announcement. Respect the choice. (Eurogamer · VGC)

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros delayed to 2027. PlaySide Studios' RTS is pushing back to give the game more time to reach the quality they're aiming for. Delays from studios that give honest reasons — "we need more time to make it good" — tend to produce better outcomes than the ones that don't. (Eurogamer)

One more thing

Xbox announced new Fallout games — including Fallout 5 — and when reporters asked the obvious follow-up ("are these Xbox console exclusives?"), the answer was... nothing. Silence, non-commitments, "no announcements on that front." In 2026, Xbox has turned "we're not saying" into a full communications strategy. PS5 owners are left doing mental math on whether to invest in the franchise or hold out for a PC release. The question isn't going away, and not answering it just means it gets asked again louder.
