The Igloo — God of War Drops a Date and a Sequel in the Same Panel

Friday, July 25, 2026. San Diego Comic-Con is in full swing, and Sony Santa Monica just made everyone's weekend plans slightly more complicated.
🎙️ Listen to today's episode: The Igloo — July 25
The lead · God of War SDCC: a release date and a sequel, same panel
Sony Santa Monica walked into their San Diego Comic-Con panel and did not ease into it. God of War Laufey — the game that centers on Faye's story before the Norse saga begins — has a release date: February 16, 2027. That's not far off.
Then, before the room had time to process that, Santa Monica head of creative Cory Barlog confirmed the next Kratos-led God of War game. It connects directly to Laufey's story. Two timelines, one universe, the saga keeps going.
Here is what we know so far: Laufey is not a side story. It's the setup for whatever Kratos carries into the next chapter. February 2027 is earlier than most expected, which makes the sequel announcement even more deliberate — they want you to play Laufey, then come back for the follow-up. That's a franchise pipeline move, and a confident one.
For players: the Norse era isn't closing, it's expanding. Faye has a full game. Kratos has another one waiting on the other side of it. The calendar just got crowded in the good way.

Final Fantasy 14 Evercold at Fan Fest Berlin — the expansion is enormous
Square Enix held Fan Fest Berlin today and the FFXIV Evercold reveals came fast. Three things worth flagging:
The FF7 collab raid. Beyond the Lifestream is Evercold's first 8-person raid, and it brings Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 7 into the same space for the first time. The Lifestream is a natural bridge — both games have been orbiting the same lore for years, and this finally pays it off in an 8-player instance. (Polygon)
The new job. The Shield Duelist wields two massive shields. Not one. Two. It is the most niche design fantasy the FF14 team has ever committed to, and the community is already fully on board. (Rock Paper Shotgun)
Switch 2 launch: August 4. FF14 hits Nintendo Switch 2 in under two weeks. That's a meaningful release window — Switch 2's catalog is still building, and a full-featured MMO with a massive story archive is a real anchor for the platform. (IGN)
The modernization angle matters here for the AI-gamedev crowd: Evercold is also reworking branching quest narratives and character action skins — old systems that haven't aged well getting rebuilt rather than patched. Live service renovation is one of the harder problems in games right now. Square Enix is doing it in public, at scale. (Polygon — modernization)
Halo: Campaign Evolved hides a secret ending — and it points at Halo 2
Halo: Campaign Evolved is out, and the community found something: a secret ending cutscene that reads as a direct tease for a Halo 2 remake. Halo Studios has not confirmed anything, but the breadcrumb is not subtle. The secret ending follows an existing franchise tradition of planting seeds in credits and post-game content, and the timing fits — Campaign Evolved is a test of whether a full-remake approach lands, and if it does, the catalog is there.
Small caveat: the game runs poorly on handheld hardware (Steam Deck, Xbox Ally). Image quality drops below what the older Master Chief Collection managed on the same devices. Worth knowing before you buy specifically for handheld play. (IGN — performance)
The secret ending, though — that's the story. (IGN — secret ending) · (GameSpot)
FF7 Revelation director on "open world fatigue" — and a bigger world than Rebirth
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi said out loud what a lot of people are thinking: open world fatigue is real, and they kept it in mind while building a map that is still larger than Rebirth. Square Enix says they were "very careful" about it — the implication being that bigger is not always better, and they know it.
That's an honest thing to say during a game announcement, and it's worth holding them to. Rebirth's world had stretches that outstayed their welcome. If Revelation is larger and tighter, that's the craft problem of the generation solved for one of the biggest franchises in games. We'll see. (IGN)
One more thing
The writers of Silent Hill f were reportedly challenged to read 100 to 200 books a year during production — pressured by each other, according to producer Motoi Okamoto. The lead writer Ryukishi07 was apparently setting the pace. No one working on that game was skimping on source material. (Eurogamer)
