The Igloo — PSN Goes Dark, Lara Gets Delayed Again, and a Blizzard Dev's Forbidden Magic
PlayStation Network went down today — and the comment sections lit up with the all-digital anxiety that's been simmering for years. Also: Tomb Raider Catalyst is now a 2028 problem, a Blizzard developer got fired for using dev-only spells to help friends insta-kill raid bosses, and a vampire RPG would like your enemy's teeth.

Thursday, July 24, 2026. The PlayStation Network went dark this morning — right as the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls open beta went live — and the player reaction was less "ugh, try again later" and more "this is exactly why the all-digital future worries me."

The lead · PSN goes down, and the all-digital argument comes back with a vengeance
PlayStation Network was offline for several hours today. Players who had bought all-digital couldn't access their libraries. The usual frustration was there — but what rose louder was the deeper anxiety: if the servers go down, or Sony decides to shut them off, do you actually own anything?
The comment sections on Sony's own channels made it explicit. Polygon documented the backlash: players on the Resident Evil movie trailer and across PlayStation pages were asking Sony to change course on discs. The timing didn't help — the outage hit hours after the Marvel Tokon open beta went live, leaving people locked out of something they had specifically shown up to play.
This is a structural problem more than a technical one. Every outage is a reminder that the all-digital model gives you a license, not a file. The industry argument is real — server infrastructure, authentication, anti-piracy. The player argument is equally real: you should be able to play what you paid for. Neither side resolves the other, which is why this conversation keeps coming back every time the servers blink.
Sony has been pushing hard toward digital. Days like today are expensive in ways that don't show up on a financial report.
Lara Croft gets delayed again — Tomb Raider Catalyst is now 2028
Amazon Games confirmed today what many had already suspected: Tomb Raider: Catalyst is delayed to 2028. The Amazon Games boss made it official. Eurogamer and IGN both have the confirmation.
This is the second Lara Croft project under Amazon to get pushed — Legacy of Atlantis was already delayed, and the TV show has had its own troubled road. At some point "we need more time" stops reading as a sign of care and starts raising questions about what's actually happening in development.
Two things remain true at the same time: more time usually makes games better, and the Tomb Raider franchise has been waiting long enough for a comeback that deserves to stick. We're watching this one closely. The thread stays open.
A Blizzard developer used forbidden dev spells to help friends kill Mythic+ bosses — and is now fired
This one has layers. Blizzard announced they've terminated a World of Warcraft developer who used development-only spells — the kind that absolutely should not exist outside of internal testing — to one-shot Mythic+ dungeon bosses for a group of regular players. The whole thing was uncovered by combat log analysts who noticed the boss kill times were impossibly fast. Blizzard says they're also taking action against the player accounts involved.
The part worth sitting with: players found this before Blizzard said anything. The community's own tools surfaced a breach of competitive integrity that the studio hadn't caught or disclosed. Mythic+ rankings matter to a lot of people, and the trust that the leaderboard reflects actual play matters too. Rock Paper Shotgun has the full breakdown. GameSpot confirmed the termination.
Blizzard acted when they found out. But "the players found it first" is the sentence that lingers.

Also: Xbox 360 emulator buried in PC backward compat titles
Dataminers digging into recent Xbox backward compatibility releases on PC found what looks like a working Xbox 360 emulator already embedded inside. Microsoft hasn't confirmed anything official, but the implication is clear: the capability exists. The Xbox 360 had an enormous catalog, much of which has never made it to modern platforms. If Microsoft is ready to move, the preservation case here is strong. Polygon has the datamine details.
One more thing
The Blood of Dawnwalker is a vampire RPG where you have 30 days to save your family. Today we learned it has Tooth Fairies — horrible ones — who will trade your enemies' teeth for the ability to bend time. That sentence contains no bad words. We're in. (Rock Paper Shotgun)
